Strong Showing at Spring Festival

Yet another historic part of The Oldham Band (Lees) history was written on Saturday 12th May as the band took part in the 92nd ‘Spring Festival’. With a well structured and emotional account of Ellerby’s ‘Chivalry’, the band came 7th out of 20 and missed out on promotion to the Senior Trophy by just 3 places. It was a “fantastic debut performance” in the competition but wasn’t without drama before we began. The band had walked on stage and settled down, moments before we began when MD, John Collins was told that one of the Tuba’s valves had seized up. After several minutes trying to fix the tuba, Tuba star Ryan Breen was asked to run back-stage to get another, which we borrowed off the band following us. Finally our performance was underway to raptuous applause from the audience....

Tameside Champions!

The Oldham Band (Lees) have been crowned the ‘Tameside Open’ Champions for the 5th year running! With glorious spring weather outside, the band’s MD, John Collins led us to the Tameside Open Trophy and £400 at Dukinfield Town Hall on Sunday after a ‘fine performance’ of Martin Ellerby’s ‘Chivalry’. Adjudicator, Gordon Higginbottom didn’t have any problems on deciding the winner describing the percussion playing within their performance as the best of the day. Steady Improvement in Blackpool

On Sunday 26th February, the band competed in the famous North-West Regional Championships. Playing Bertrand Moren’s ‘Mountain Views’, the band put on a fine performance in Blackpool’s Winter Garden’s but what many had tipped as a winning performance was just not quite to the taste of adjudicator, Malcolm Brownbill. 5th place was eventually the bands’ placing but as disappointing as this result was, our steady improvement and great consistency at this high level has payed off and we now sit 2nd in the 1st Section points table meaning a good result next year will lead to yet another promotion, this time to the Championship Section, competing against the likes of Fodens, Fairey and Leyland in the North-West.
